Soccer teams across Europe who miss out on qualification for the Champions League, have the potential for a consolation prize. The Europa League is seen as the secondary competition for club sides on the continent but it’s very much a serious piece of silverware and it offers thrills and entertainment from start to finish.
Its popularity is backed up by the betting community with great interest in the Europa League markets at Unibet. If you’re thinking about joining in, here’s what you need to know.
The Europa League began life as the UEFA Cup at the start of the 1971/72 season. Following a rebrand in 2009, the competition was renamed and expanded to include more clubs within its format.
Currently, following a series of qualifying rounds, 48 teams will make it through to the group phase. They will then be divided into 12 groups of four and each side will play each other on a home and away basis. At the end of that series, the top two clubs in each section will progress to the knockout stage where they will have some company.
Eight clubs from the Champions League will now drop down to help form a round of 32. From this point, knockout games will be played over two legs ahead of a one-off final which is hosted at a neutral stadium.
It’s a lengthy and somewhat complex system and it’s one that gives us a lot of soccer to cover.
Outright betting markets for the overall winner of the Europa League will be available and it will also be possible to speculate on the winner of each of those 12 initial groups.
Match betting takes over once the competition gets underway and there will be many hundreds of prop markets listed including team bets and potential wagers on individual goal scorers.
